ADR course content

Course Structure

ADR Training Course vary in length based on the type of goods being transported. Most candidates choose either a 4-day course covering Core, Packages, and 7 Classes or a 5-day course that includes the Tanks module.

The 4-day course structure is as follows:

  • Day 1 – Core
  • Day 2 – Practicals & Packages
  • Day 3 – 7 Classes
  • Day 4 – Exams

Core

The drivers knowledge and skills necessary in their core operational duties:

  • The general requirements governing the carriage of dangerous goods
  • Information on environmental protection in the control of the transfer of wastes
  • Driver responsibilities during the carriage of dangerous goods
  • The prohibitions on mixed loading in the same vehicle or container
  • Enforcement action
  • Security and ‘high consequence dangerous goods’
  • General information concerning civil liability
  • Basic knowledge about the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE)

Packages

The specialist knowledge and skills necessary for drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods in packages and/or bulk:

  • Packaging requirements, marks and exemptions related to excepted and limited quantities
  • Awareness of the UN Packaging scheme, the performance testing and certification
  • The purpose and types of packages regarding their containment, integrity, durability, and pressure retention, including the need for ullage and relieving excess pressure
  • The marks and labels required for packages, IBCs and overpacks
  • Definition of the carriage in bulk and bulk carrying vehicles
  • The allocation and purpose of transport categories and exemptions related to quantities carried per transport unit including different transport category loads
  • Correct and safe handling of all loads, including loading, stowage, restraining and unloading
  • Segregation methods and responsibilities of all persons involved
  • The correct marking and placarding of vehicles carrying packages, bulk and containers subject to ADR, IMDG and Domestic regulations

Tankers

The specialist knowledge and skills necessary for drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods in fixed tanks or demountable tanks with a capacity exceeding 1m3, drivers of battery-vehicles with a total capacity exceeding 1m3 and drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods in tank containers, portable tanks or MEGCs with an individual capacity exceeding 3m3 on a transport unit:

  • The specific additional provisions applicable to the use of tanks
  • The specific requirements of the vehicles
  • The procedures to be followed in relation to the operation of tanks and tank containers
  • Knowledge of the various and different filling and discharge systems
  • The behavior of vehicles, tankers and tank containers on the road, including movements of the load
  • What to do in the case of an incident or accident

7 classes

The preventative and safety measures appropriate to the various types of hazards in Classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9

Upon Successful Completion of Course, Participants will:

Frequently Asked Questions

ADR roughly translates as ‘European Agreement For The International Carriage Of Dangerous Goods By Road’.

It is based upon a United Nations Treaty and has been in existence for over 50 years.

Yes, all ADR licences are valid for 5 years. If you renew your licence, it will run for exactly 5 years from the expiry date on your current ADR licence.

ADR licences may be renewed at any point during the final year of the current licence’s validity. Candidates must have a minimum of 6 weeks remaining in order that SQA can link the 2 licences together to run consecutively. The new licence will then run for 5 years from the expiry date of the original licence. Training may be completed before year 5 or during the final 6 weeks, but the new licence will be valid for 5 years from the examination date.

The minimum an ADR licence can be issued for is a single class of dangerous goods in either tanks or packages. Additional classes can be added by attending the ADR training course element for that class of Dangerous Good and passing the multiple-choice examination.

Yes. By attending the 1.5-day Tanks ADR training course and passing the multiple-choice examination. You will then receive a new ADR photocard licence showing that you can now transport the existing classes of Dangerous Goods in Tanks as well as Packages.

No, they don’t. The responsibility rests totally with the driver. You can register with SQA for an email reminder but most drivers or their employers monitor it themselves.

Yes. If you have lost your ADR licence, you need to contact the Scottish Qualifications Authority. A form can be downloaded from the SQA dangerous goods website. A small charge will apply.

Unfortunately not. A driver must complete 35 hours of Periodic Driver CPC training during the life of their current Driver Qualification Card (DQC) to trigger a DQC for the next 5 years. If you have already completed some periodic training, you will only be able to claim such hours as to take your total to 35 hours.

No. Periodic training can only be taken once the driver has a Driver Qualification Card. If you are a newly qualified driver, the order you undertake training should ideally be pass your initial CPC module 4 test then attend ADR training. That way you’ll be able to claim 21 or 28 hours of CPC uploads.
